Did you know that there’s one thing that could make you feel not only like a superstar but also like you’re the smartest person in the room?
Yes! According to a Harvard Medical School research, women who wore makeup graded their confidence higher than women who didn’t wear makeup. And not only that but when the researchers gave tests to the two groups, the women who wore makeup scored higher! Because that’s the power of makeup!
It doesn’t matter if we’re talking about everyday life or showing up on camera, makeup has the amazing ability to transform our self-esteem and boost our confidence!
I discovered this for myself! Makeup makes me feel like a star, so I project a little extra, and that reflects in my videos! After all, there’s a reason why every actor, actress, and talk show host wears a lot of makeup! Yes, even the men!
And here’s the thing: stage makeup is different from everyday makeup. When you’re creating videos, a good rule of thumb is: more is better. It looks great on camera and when you add a pop of color to your look, your audience will notice, and you’ll stop the scroll!
Are you curious to find out how I do my signature video makeup, and how you, too, can elevate your look and bring your best self forward? That’s exactly what I’ll show you inside the training today! Let’s get started!
Stage Makeup for Videos: How to be Camera-Ready Every Day
Know Your Tones
What are your natural colors? Are you leaning towards the cold or the warm spectrum? Cold colors are blue, green, purple and warm colors are yellow, red, orange, brown.
You need to keep in mind these three natural colors:
- Hair (your natural color)
- Skin undertone
PRO Tip: Not sure how to figure out your skin undertone? Try this! Take a look at the veins on your wrist. Do they look blue/purple? Then you have cold undertones. Or perhaps they look more greenish? Then you have warm undertones!
Now that you know your natural colors, are they warm or cold? If they’re mixed, congratulations! You are able to experiment with more variations of color!
Levels of Makeup Application
Did you know that makeup application comes in at 3 different levels? When you know which level you are, it’s easier to know how you can elevate your look! So let’s talk about them!
Level 1: Little to no makeup
You feel comfortable going out of the house with a clear face, and every now and then, you may put on a little mascara.
Level 2: Medium makeup
Eyeliner, mascara, and the occasional lipstick are your go-to products. Whatever the combination, you like to get ready before you present yourself to the world.
Level 3: Full makeup
That’s my kind of makeup although I’ve been rocking the Level 2 makeup! I know it’s not for everyone, but I just love the way I feel when I put on a little extra glam!
So how can you elevate your look?
Be YOU times 2 with your makeup, as well as with your energy! That’s the key to any successful video!
So now that we have all that cleared and out of the way, let’s dive deeper into how you can turn your day makeup into stage makeup!
What’s the best way to make your eyes pop? You could either use an eyeshadow that’s a similar color to your eyes or if you’re looking for a little extra something – use the opposite color.
The main thing you need to pay attention to is blending. You don’t want rough edges. I use a shimmery eyeshadow to blend in my main color, However, be careful not to overdo it. Because if you’re using products with too much shimmer and then you go Live using a Diva Ring Light, for example, it might backfire.
Step #2: Eyeliner
Using eyeliner is a great way to make your eyes appear bigger.
I use a pencil to underline my lower waterline. You can also do it for your upper waterline. But for me, regular eyeliner works best there.
PRO Tip: When you’re applying your eyeliner, make sure to start in the middle and then fill in the rest.
Step #3: Eyelashes
What’s one of the most feminine ways to pop on camera? Eyelashes!
I love using lash strips to get that extra oomph! My favorite brand is Red Cherry False Eyelashes #43 because they follow the natural curve of my eyes and when I put them on, they look amazing! You can find my favorite beauty and makeup products >>> HERE!
PRO Tip: When you’re putting on glue, wait for 60 seconds before you put the lashes on your eyelid. That way the glue becomes gooey. Otherwise, the eyelash starts to go all over the place and it’s harder to actually pin it down.
Now that your 60 seconds have passed, take a pair of tweezers and use them to gently place the lash on top of your eyelid. Make sure you set it in the middle and then simply adjust the beginning and the end. And you’re done!
Step #4: Eyebrows
Eyebrows are one of the most important parts of any makeup routine because they give your face definition and frame your eyes. And here comes the tricky part. How long should your eyebrows be?
Try this method. Use your pencil to make a line from the end of your lips, all the way to the inner part of your eye. That’s where your eyebrow should start. Then take the pencil and place it from the end of your lips, all the way to the outer part of your eyes — that’s the end!
And what about the arch? Use the pencil again but this time, place it from the end of your lips all the way through to the middle of your eye — that’s the arch.
Now all you have to do is fill your eyebrows in. And if you’re looking for that extra elevation – highlight the area under your eyebrows.
Step #5: Under-eye
Use a highlighter that’s a shade or two lighter than your foundation. Take a flat brush and use what we call the “triangle method”.
Draw a triangle under your eyes and fill it in. Then press the product into your under-eye and blend it in. It will give you an instant lift and it will make your eyes look amazing, especially on camera!
Step #6: Foundation
Apply your favorite foundation with a big brush. Try to stay away from what you just did under your eyes. Stipple the makeup — that will even out your skin tone.
PRO Tip: Use a setting (also called “translucent”) powder, so your makeup will last longer!
Step #7: Bronzer and Blush (Contouring)
Or it can be blush and bronzer — it’s up to you!
Take a little blush and dab it into your hand, so you don’t put too much product on your face. Then smile and apply the blush on the apple of your cheek. And from then on, you can build up and make it as strong as you’d like!
Next, it’s time for the bronzer! Pick a color that’s a shade darker than your foundation. Apply it from the top of your forehead, down to the middle of your cheek, so it forms a nice, big “C”! Then turn that “C” into a “3”, and bring the brush down to the base of your jawline.
Ta-da! Your basic stage make up is now complete!
To complete your look, use a little highlighter where the light hits your face. Those are the high points: forehead, cheekbones, top of your nose, and chin.
Remember: always blend your makeup!
And the final result is amazing!
