Why is Engagement Important?
We all like it when we get a thumbs up or a heart, right? And we know that the more actions people take on our posts, the more visibility the post will get.
And think about it like this: engagement leads to starting more conversations. More conversations lead to deeper relationships, and deeper relationships lead to more prospects and higher conversion rates!
That’s why it can feel very underwhelming when a post gets a ton of shares, likes, and comments one day, but gets crickets — the next. So why is this happening?
The Big Reason
Are you ready for a #truthbomb? Your friends and followers are spread thin.
Yes! The newsfeed is no longer just the place where you share your thoughts and post pictures. You have Stories, Live video, IGTV, Facebook Watch Parties, Facebook Groups, different modalities on your newsfeed, and so many other places where people can follow what you’ve been up to!
A few years ago, your friends would just go to your wall to see what all you are up to. Today? They can choose their favorite way to consume your content. And that’s why you’re seeing less engagement on your “wall”. Makes sense?
That’s why these Social Media platforms are constantly updating their algorithms to try and show the most relevant content to your audience.
So what can you do in order to increase your engagement?
Solution #1: Follow the Trends
Have you noticed how Stories are taking over?
Test this out: post a picture on your newsfeed and then add the same picture to your Stories. Which one do you think will get more engagement?
In our experience, Stories perform better. On Facebook, you get a circle around your profile picture, which gets people’s attention. And the features are expanding! You can now do a Story on Instagram and share it automatically to Facebook. Some experts say that might hurt your engagement but we say — play with it. If you see that you’re getting fewer views and likes, mix things up!
And the best part? You can post more often without fear of the algorithm messing things up! And what’s more, you can see who’s been watching your Stories, so you can reach out to them! How cool that is?

Solution #2: Educate Your Audience
Did you know that Facebook recently changed the notification settings inside your private groups? There’s too much information, so now, most people only see “highlights”. That’s why you need to educate your audience.
Ask them to go to your Group and then —> Notifications —> All Posts.
For Business Pages, they need to click on the Follow button, and then Notifications —> All On.
PRO Tip: Consistency is KEY! If you show up with value day in and day out, you’re going to build a solid foundation for your brand and you’ll attract your ideal audience!
Solution #3: Encourage Engagement
You need to have a Call to Action (CTA) or a Call to Comment (CTC) in your posts.
But here’s the thing… Posting on your feed and saying, “Let me know in the comments” doesn’t work anymore. Going Live and urging your viewers to “Drop me the word “replay” if you’re watching the Replay” doesn’t work as well. The algorithm is learning to recognize these patterns and doesn’t consider them meaningful conversation. And you know what that means — it’s showing these post to fewer people.
So what can you do?
Start making more meaningful CTCs. For example, you ask your audience, “If you’re watching this on a Replay, tell me what your #1 goal is right now when it comes to XYZ (the topic you’re discussing)”.
PRO Tip: Have fun with it! It’s your world, we live in it. Experiment, test things out, and see what works best for you and your audience!
Remember: Don’t get bitter, get better! Don’t get so hung up on how many Likes you’re getting, rather focus on the quality conversations that you start.
Things will always change and we can’t control that. But what we can control is how we respond to these changes! That’s why we need to grow and become better versions of ourselves every single day!
